Setting up a VPN on MikroTik with NvoVPN starts with checking compatibility: the built-in WireGuard interface in RouterOS cannot automatically be considered a client of AmneziaWG. We recommend NvoVPN for secure access and bypassing restrictions, but the connection method depends on the router and network: a compatible WireGuard configuration, a separate gateway with AmneziaWG, or the NvoVPN app directly on the device.
The most unpleasant mistake here is transferring keys to the WireGuard menu, seeing the enabled interface, and deciding that protection is already working. The interface can be active without an established connection, and the internet may continue to go directly through the provider. Below is the setup order that helps distinguish a working tunnel from just filled fields.
What is a VPN and how does it work?
Definition of VPN
A VPN is a secure connection between a device or router and a remote server. It allows internet traffic to be transmitted while hiding the contents of that segment of the connection from the local network and provider.

On MikroTik, a VPN can serve the entire home network or only selected devices. For example, a TV can be routed through a tunnel while leaving a work computer on a direct connection. This is determined by routes and traffic processing rules, not merely by the presence of a VPN interface.
How a VPN Works
The router receives a packet from the device, selects a route, and sends it through an encrypted tunnel. The VPN server forwards the request further, and the response returns along the same path. For the website, the external address of such a connection usually becomes the VPN exit address.
But encryption and masking are different tasks. DPI, or traffic analysis by the operator, can recognize characteristic signs of the protocol without decrypting the data. Therefore, a regular tunnel may sometimes be blocked, even though its encryption remains intact.
AmneziaWG alters the traffic characteristics of WireGuard, making recognition more difficult. VLESS/XTLS-Reality uses a different connection and masking mechanism. These capabilities must be supported by the client: the name WireGuard in the router menu does not add them by itself.
Advantages of Using a VPN
A VPN helps access resources that are unavailable through a direct connection and protects data transmission between the client and server. Setting it up on the router is convenient for devices where the necessary app cannot be installed, including some TVs.
However, a VPN does not replace updates, account protection, and caution with suspicious links. Websites can still identify users through authentication and cookies. And with strict filtering, availability depends not only on the server but also on the protocol, client, and operator rules.
Connecting NvoVPN to MikroTik
Advantages of NvoVPN
For bypassing restrictions, we recommend NvoVPN; check the available protocols and app features before connecting. According to NvoVPN, modern encryption, traffic obfuscation, and a no-logs policy are used.
Check the available server locations before connecting. Choose a location based on the task: the required exit region, availability of a specific website, and connection quality through your provider. It would be incorrect to promise the same speed on any route.
However, the recommendation of NvoVPN does not mean that the NvoVPN app can be installed on any MikroTik. The app's capabilities do not appear in RouterOS after importing the configuration. The router's technical compatibility is checked first.
Protocol Compatibility: AmneziaWG and VLESS
Confirm NvoVPN's support for AmneziaWG before connecting: this is an obfuscated WireGuard whose traffic is masked as regular. Manual connection uses parameters from the personal account. For Linux, check the available connection methods; when using the AmneziaWG configuration, the amneziawg-tools package and the awg-quick command are used.
Also confirm support for VLESS/XTLS-Reality and CDN masking in the NvoVPN app before connecting. This protocol should be considered when a direct AmneziaWG connection is filtered. The built-in WireGuard menu in RouterOS is not a VLESS client.
From here, the main choice arises: whether to protect the entire network through the router or provide access on a specific device. For phones and laptops, the app is usually simpler: there is no need to transfer routing to the home gateway. For a TV or a separate network segment, an additional device may be required.
Comparison with Other VPNs
Here, it is more useful to compare the architecture of the connection rather than the unverified speed claims of different services. Regular WireGuard, AmneziaWG, and VLESS solve similar tasks in different ways, and the same word "VPN" does not make them interchangeable.
| Connection Method | Compatibility with MikroTik | Operation under Filtering | When to Choose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular WireGuard | Through the built-in interface on supported RouterOS | May be recognized and blocked by DPI | When configuration compatibility is confirmed, and the network does not block the protocol |
| AmneziaWG | A client supporting the appropriate configuration is needed; the regular WireGuard interface is insufficient | Obfuscation makes recognition difficult but does not guarantee access in any network | For a compatible gateway or device with the appropriate client |
| VLESS/XTLS-Reality | Cannot be configured through the built-in WireGuard menu | Stealth mode to counter DPI | In a compatible application under strict filtering |
Therefore, setting up a VPN on MikroTik should not start with selecting a similar menu item. First, determine which protocol can actually serve your router, then choose the connection scheme. Transferring parameters between incompatible clients does not replace protocol support.
Step-by-step guide to setting up NvoVPN on MikroTik
Preparing MikroTik for configuration
Start with a local connection to the router via WinBox or WebFig. Changing the main route remotely is risky: an error may cut off access to the router itself. In WinBox, enable Safe Mode before changing routes and firewall settings.
Record the model and system version. Open System → Resources. The terminal shows system information with the command
/system resource print, the list of installed packages —/system package print. Do not confuse the RouterOS version with the MikroTik model name.Save the configuration. In Files, create a backup via Backup and download it to your computer. Additionally, perform
/export file=before-vpnand save the resulting text export. Do not publish backups and configurations: they may contain sensitive information.Check regular internet access. Before setting up the tunnel, the provider connection, domain name resolution, and access to websites must work. An existing DNS malfunction can easily be mistaken for a VPN issue.
Check available interfaces. Find WireGuard in WinBox or WebFig. If the section is missing, clarify the capabilities of the installed RouterOS and the support for updates for your specific model. The presence of the section confirms WireGuard support, but not AmneziaWG.
Obtain NvoVPN parameters. In the personal account, open "Connection" → "Manual" and save the configuration. Before changing MikroTik, check with support for the compatibility of this file with your RouterOS. There is no need to remove unfamiliar obfuscation parameters on your own.
On older versions of RouterOS, do not attempt to replace the missing protocol with a random item from the PPP menu. If updating is not possible or the built-in client is unsuitable, leave MikroTik as the router and move the VPN to a separate gateway or end devices.
And do not blindly update the working router just to get the desired menu. First, check hardware support, free space, backup, and the ability to restore access. Updating the system does not automatically mean support for AmneziaWG will appear.
Setting up AmneziaWG on MikroTik
The native setup of AmneziaWG cannot honestly be described as simply filling in the WireGuard fields in RouterOS. If the NvoVPN configuration requires obfuscation, the built-in WireGuard client does not become compatible just by transferring keys. Practically, two schemes are available: a confirmed compatible WireGuard connection or a separate AmneziaWG gateway.
The scheme with the built-in WireGuard is permissible only after checking compatibility. In networks without blocks, a regular WireGuard may work for the NvoVPN configuration, but this does not justify promising the operation of any file on any MikroTik. The following actions pertain specifically to the confirmed compatible configuration.
Create an interface. In WireGuard, add the interface and fill in the Private Key from the compatible configuration. The private key should not be sent in correspondence or shown in screenshots. Do not change other parameters to random values from other instructions.
Add the tunnel address. In IP → Addresses, create an entry: take the Address from the configuration, and in Interface, select the created WireGuard interface. The tunnel address is not the public address of the server or the address of the home subnet.
Create a remote node. In WireGuard → Peers, specify the Interface, Public Key of the server, Endpoint Address, and Endpoint Port. If a Preshared Key is provided, transfer it to the corresponding field. Set Allowed Address according to the agreed routing scheme: this field alone does not replace the route.
First, route a test device through the VPN. For a separate route, use Routing → Tables, IP → Routes, and Routing → Rules, if these sections are available in the installed RouterOS. In the rule, the source must be the address of the selected device, and the table must be the VPN routing table. Specific addresses are taken from your network, not from a universal example.
Coordinate NAT and filtering. If the remote side does not route the home subnet back, a suitable srcnat rule with masquerade action on the outgoing VPN interface will be required in IP → Firewall → NAT. In Filter Rules, check the permission for forwarding the selected traffic. Do not add a general permission for all incoming connections.
Configure DNS and behavior on disconnection. Choose whether the test client should lose internet access when the VPN is unavailable or return to the direct route. In split routing, the action lookup-only-in-table prohibits searching for a route in another table; the action lookup allows further searching. Check the result on the client, not just in the list of rules.
Exact commands for creating routes cannot be safely written without addressing your network, the provider's interface, and active rules. A foreign command that changes the main route can disconnect the internet or send the VPN server address into a tunnel that is not yet operational. For diagnostics without changing settings, use /ip route print and /ip firewall nat print.
A separate gateway scheme is needed if AmneziaWG is specifically required. With confirmed AmneziaWG support, a compatible Linux computer connects to NvoVPN via a configuration file, amneziawg-tools, and awg-quick. Then MikroTik directs the selected devices to the local address of this gateway.
On Linux, packet forwarding, firewall, NAT, and DNS are configured separately. A regular computer with VPN enabled is not yet a gateway for other devices. The installation order of amneziawg-tools depends on the distribution and kernel, so there is no universal installation command here.
And another limitation: the capabilities of the NvoVPN app cannot be automatically transferred to such a scheme. If the task is to access a blocked resource on a laptop or phone in a complex network, the NvoVPN app will be a more straightforward solution than restructuring home routing.
Connection check
Check the connection from the device that should indeed go through the VPN. Checking from the MikroTik terminal may use a different route and not reflect the path of the home computer.
Check the tunnel status. For the built-in WireGuard, execute
/interface wireguard peers print detail. Look for information about the last handshake and the transmission counter changes. An enabled interface without communication with the server does not confirm the connection.Compare the external address. Open an IP checking service before and after enabling the selected route. The address should correspond to the VPN exit. On a device left outside the VPN, the route should not change.
Check DNS and website availability. Open several resources by domain names, then the required blocked service. An error from one site does not yet prove the entire tunnel is faulty.
Check for disconnection and recovery. Temporarily disable the VPN interface or separate gateway. Ensure that the selected client behaves according to your policy: remains inaccessible or connects directly. After restoring the connection, check the route again.
If IPv6 is used in the network, check the external address and route separately for it. A tunnel only for IPv4 does not mean that all device traffic is protected. Also, check the secure DNS settings in the browser: they may differ from the DNS provided by the router.
Typical problems and fixes. No handshake — check the keys, server address, port, network availability, and protocol compatibility. Handshake exists, but there is no internet — check routes, NAT, and DNS. Only some sites open — additionally check MTU, IPv6, and filtering rules without changing all settings at once.
If FastTrack is used, check whether traffic with a separate routing table is included. Such connections may bypass the expected processing. Excluding the necessary traffic from FastTrack should be done consciously: this can change the load on the router's processor.
In case of strict blocking, first compare the connection through another network, such as home Wi-Fi and a mobile operator. If AmneziaWG is filtered, clarify the available alternative protocols in the NvoVPN app on a supported device. In operator "whitelist" mode, connection is not guaranteed.
Frequently asked questions about NvoVPN and MikroTik
Which protocol is better for MikroTik: AmneziaWG or VLESS?
The choice primarily depends on the client. The built-in WireGuard in RouterOS does not replace either AmneziaWG or VLESS. AmneziaWG is suitable for routing through a separate compatible gateway; in case of strict filtering on the end device, we recommend clarifying the available protocols and features of the NvoVPN app. There is no universal guarantee for bypassing blocks.
Can I use NvoVPN on other devices?
Yes, NvoVPN apps are available for Windows, macOS, Android, iPhone, and iPad. For Linux, check the availability of the app and compatible configurations. Routers and Smart TVs require a compatible client or connection through a configured gateway.
Current installation methods for the app for iPhone and iPad can be found in the official instructions for iPhone and iPad. The already installed NvoVPN app continues to work.
How to check if NvoVPN is working on MikroTik?
Check the handshake and tunnel counters, then the external IP and website accessibility from the selected client device. Also check DNS, IPv6, and behavior when disconnecting the VPN. Correct VPN configuration on MikroTik is confirmed by the route of real traffic, not just the active interface icon.
What to do if NvoVPN does not connect?
First, ensure that the internet works without VPN and the subscription is active. Then check client compatibility, configuration relevance, server address, and firewall rules. If the connection does not establish only with one operator, compare the result through another network and the NvoVPN app.
To contact support, prepare the MikroTik model, RouterOS version, a description of the scheme, and the error text. There is no need to publish private keys and a complete backup. If the built-in WireGuard is incompatible with the AmneziaWG configuration, further rearranging routes will not fix the protocol issue.
How to subscribe to NvoVPN?
